I have a hard time imagining that an expensive hotel room is EVER worth the opportunity cost. An ice hotel might be my personal exception ... but then you can be sure I'd be at the cheapest one :)

Alex, I love your ideas for potential in-depth articles! When BT gets their hat on straight, I'd be happy to research any of those they saw fit.

You are absolutely right, however, that these times call for a different kind of travel article -- either of a "how do I keep traveling/saving for travel in this uncertain economic climate" or "how do I cultivate a travel ethos closer to home" nature. I feel Tim Leffel (of Perceptive Travel, etc.) has been doing an excellent job of addressing concerns such as layoffs from a travel opportunistic point of view.

We certainly need less fantasy travel fluff and more writing that addresses both practical money-saving matters and philosophical discussions of travel values. I would love to see a discussion of such a thing amongst travel bloggers/writers ...
