You've probably seen the stuff on the web about Ryanair having launched a new base at Birmingham. Funny thing is that they've already got a chunky base at East Midlands airport, about 35 miles away, as well. I know there's a similiar thing in London, but London has vastly more people (10mn instead of 1mn), and is a lot more attractive to inbound tourists than Birmingham ! I know Birmingham is the regional big city and all that... but could Ryanair really not find a worthwhile city in mainland Europe to open up instead ? Somewhere in Poland, Porto, Riga, or Bratislava (would be a good way to kill off SkyEurope) could all make good bases.
Or did Birmingham airport just panic when British Airways sold their non-London operation to flybe instead ?
