Great post, and I agree completely. We are even having this argument/problem right here in the US: do we continue to regal the chain store, or do we pledge our allegiance to mom and pop? Because of climate change and overpopulation, localization is key: chains will go away one day because the planet cannot sustain them, but we need to think now about what will be left when that day comes, so we are not stuck with abandoned, greasy stick frame buildings.

Wow. Great insight. You flesh out an important and timely perspective.

I haven't been to Grand Cayman since I was a pre-teen. My mother dragged me there on a cruise, and I was left with the impression that these islands were nothing more than a duty-free emporium with some nice beaches.

When I plan trips to the Caribbean, I often look for places less favored by my fellow Americans. This usually makes for a more affordable and more authentic cultural experience--not to mention less development.

I hope the Caymans can find a way to get back to their "roots" and that developing Caribbean nations will take note.
